Amazing creatures! True nature artwork! They are the most abundant beings in nature. They are the insects!
Insects are life forms that have existed for hundreds of millions of years and have evolved very well to adapt to different types of environments and situations. And one of the places that they adapted very well and established themselves as faithful residents were cities.
You may not even realize it, but they are in every corner of the city. In trees, squares, parks, inside your house, in your backyard, in sewers and anywhere else you can imagine.
The diversity of species is enormous. You will find all kinds of insects in cities. Bees, spiders, cockroaches, beetles, butterflies, snails, termites, ants, crickets, dragonflies, hornets, flies, bed bugs, snake lice, small armadillos, caterpillars, wasps and many others.
They are true architects of nature, with their webs and beehives, incredible structures and unparalleled in other animal species…
These insects have several functions in the ecosystem of urban animals, something very similar to natural environments. Some act as pollinators, others serve as food for birds, reptiles and mammals. They can even serve as food for the insects themselves. Ants and spiders are very efficient predators and do not dispense any possible meal.
Spiders have adapted very well to cities and there are several species of them in urban centers.
Ants are also old acquaintances of city dwellers and can practically be considered a natural heritage of urban centers.
There are also inhabitants with beautiful colors and fascinating shapes such as some species of beetles, crickets and the imposing dragonflies. Other creatures are not so cute and can cause us some kind of aversion, such as cockroaches, caterpillars and snake lice.
According to the fauna inventory of the São Paulo City carried out in 2021, there are 462 species of insects inhabiting the county. It is a significant amount representing the largest group of animals that live in the city.
Some of these creatures may not be so dear to us, but they are part of nature's beautiful diversity and all are important for the balance of the urban ecosystem.
Next time you take a walk around town, try to notice them all around you. You will be enchanted by the beauty of these species.
