Urban Birds
Birds are amazing creatures. They have enchanted us since the dawn of humanity, with their beautiful plumage, pleasant corners and the incredible ability to fly. Cities have taken over nature and invaded the habitats of many animals. They, in turn, had to adapt in order to be able to live in urbanized places. Birds have a great ability to adapt to urban spaces and have become able to take advantage of this situation.
We can't even notice, but in practically every city on the planet there are many species of birds living in urban places. In our daily routines and busy life, typical of cities, we often don't even realize the amount of birds that surround us.
In São Paulo city, in Brazil, there are many birds completely adapted to live in urban centers and capable of taking advantage of the city to feed, reproduce and build their nests. Urban parks and squares, because they still have trees, are favorite places for birds to call home. In these places we can find several species, some of them exotic.
It is estimated that there are more than five hundred different species of birds living in São Paulo city, more than all of Chile or Portugal. That represents 26% of the existing species in Brazil. The birds of São Paulo are rich and diverse, composed of resident and migratory, native and introduced species. What provides this great diversity are the two green corridors that run through the city: Serra da Cantareira, to the north, and Serra do Mar, to the south, in addition to the more than one hundred urban parks spread across its territory.
Urban birds explored various types of food, different environments and varied nesting sites.
The metropolis of São Paulo has many different types of fruit plants, in addition to vegetation that provides a wide variety of insects. Therefore, many of the bird species have no difficulty finding food. A smaller portion of them look for flowers to consume nectar or micro-arthropods.
Four native species can be observed by anyone who takes five minutes to look at birds anywhere in the city: orange thrush, ben-te-vi, rich parakeet and gray tanager. There are also some species of doves that live in the metropolis, in great abundance and can be observed in practically every corner of the city. Parrots also thrived in the city and expanded their natural range, making it possible to observe them in large flocks. There are also some species of birds of prey, which hunt rodents, small reptiles and smaller birds.
Birds are incredible animals and have taken over large urban centers. Next time you take a walk through the streets, try to observe them around you.
